The Mooladhara Chakra is placed at the very base of the spinal column. It has an important role as support for both the subtle body system and Kundalini and so it is closely related to balance and stability. The Mooladhara Chakra is placed below the Mooladhara which houses the Kundalini. It is the foundation of the psyche, where it is grounded and supports the other centres. Any strong disturbance to its sensitivity throws the individual off-balance and causes mental disturbance. The qualities of the Mooladhara Chakra are innocence and wisdom and eternal childhood. To awaken these we use the affirmation "Mother, please make me, (or I am) the innocence." The Mooladhara Chakra is the seat of our grounding force, our connection with Mother Earth. It is made of the Earth element and represents the beginning and primary principle of Life. Firstly, gross matter was created using the four petalled Carbon atom as the first building block. Like Carbon this chakra has four petals, a stable configuration. The Earth is our vehicle for Life and is innocent in this role. She does not judge- matter simply is and supports. In the same way the innocence of a child simply is, without thinking judgement or concern and this quality is in concert with the innate pure wisdom of a child. Children often see and speak clearly. "From the mouth of babes". When this chakra is awakened it's magnetic force starts working. A person whose Mooladhara chakra is awakened has an inner sense of stability and direction. The qualities of this chakra are those of innocence, wisdom, purity, eternal childhood. These qualities are naturally inherent within each being, but we can through various practices damage this centre. This is the centre that governs the retention, elimination and sexual aspect of human beings. The triangular bone at the base of the spine in which Kundalini resides, the Sacrum (kumbha), was called sacred by the Greeks. Since the Mooladhara chakra is placed below the Kundalini and as She does not pass through this centre, there can be no question of awakening Her through sex as suggested in some practices. Sex has its place in human life as the most natural and sublime physical expression of love within the marriage. Through this channel, realised souls of tremendous power are waiting to take their birth. If this centre is misused, through over indulgence, fantasising or promiscuity on the left side, or suppression, dogmatism and puritanism on the right, it can impede, weaken or even damage the chakra. An awakened and lively Mooladhara chakra brings forth spontaneous wisdom, innocence, dedication, purity and joy. Such a personality is auspicious, and contributes good fortune to his/ her surroundings. The presiding deity or personification of the Mooladhara chakra is Shri Ganesha, the child with the head of an elephant. He is innocent and helps us to remove obstacles in our way. The quality of chastity, often ridiculed in the West, is a useful practice to develop subtle strength, spiritual balance and physical, mental and emotional health.

It moves around the Void, giving sustenance to any weak areas. When the Kundalini first rises it passes via Nabhi along the cord to enlighten the Swadisthan. The quality of Swadhistan on the Right side is creativity, ie truely inspired thoughts, ideas and actions. The quality of Swadhistan on the Left side is pure knowledge, ie the truely discerning and discriminating power to see the innate nature of things at a new stage in your awareness called vibrational awareness. Sahaja affirmations include "Mother, please give me the true knowledge" and "Mother, please make me the creative knowledge" and "Mother, verily You are the doer and enjoyer." Here the energy and purity of our creativity is generated. On the right side it manifests as intellect; on the left side as imagination. These aspects integrate in the central channel creating our aesthetic sense. The development of aesthetics was the third step in human evolution when humanity transcended the audiovisual senses. For the first time humanity entered the abstract; we could imagine, forecast and conceive of images or ideas beyond the our senses. moreover this asthetic sense can discer true beauty and so the Swadhistan is capable of authoring truth concepts and ideas that are auspicious, ie pleasing to the Divine. To create one has to be a visionary first. One has to have the capacity to project something forth beyond the three dimensions. Animals don't have this capacity; it is a special gift to humans. The one who has true genius; he becomes a creative force, an avant-garde, the forerunner of society. Scientists like Einstein, artists like Monet, composers like Mozart, writers like Shakespeare are capable of inspired works. Often they proclaim their mind was vacant at the time of their in-spirit-ation and so the meditative state is best for achieving the best inspirational ideas and activities. This is consistent with being in the'zone' of high level achievement in many endeavours including reflecting on or thinking about things. However, human beings have a tendency to pursue everything to extremes. This centre is also responsible for breaking down fat particles in the abdomen to replace the grey and white cells of the brain, thus regenerating the capacity for thinking. Non-stop thinking exhausts the right Sun/Pingala channel and swells the ego. This pushes the super ego down and thus severs the connection with the central channel which is nurtured by the all-pervading Spirit, the real reservoir of creativity. Instead of a sponge the brain becomes like a rock, losing its capacity for absorption. ('Think less - enjoy more') The Swadisthan chakra also looks after the liver, pancreas, spleen and parts of the reproductive system. If this centre is overworked by the thinking process, the other organs it has to look after are neglected also and the whole attention can really suffer. Problems here are indicated by tingling in the thumb and middle finger of the right hand. This centre on the right is particularly important in that it is the seat of our attention (chitta). Therefore if it is not balanced we find it hard to relax and to be in the meditation state. The quality of the left side of this chakra is true knowledge. This is a pure knowledge that is beyond the ego (that distorts the purity of things). When pure we reflect the inner beauty that is like a still and silent lake. We can locate this inner pool of truth and beauty and become the reflective channel for it.

It is placed in the centre of the stomach area, in the centre of the subtle body region known as the Void. Our seeking is felt from this chakra, the needs for water, food, shelter, love, and fulfilment which ultimately manifest as our spiritual seeking. It is the power of our pure desire that awakens and sustains Kundalini's ascent and determines the quality of our Self-realisation. The affirmation for enlightening Nabhi (Manipur) Chakra is "In my Spirit I am satisfied". After Self-realisation, the awakened Kundalini pierces the Nabhi from side to side and soothes and nourishes this important centre. The principle element of Nabhi is water. Water is the key element that sustains all Earthly life and is essential to the evolutionary process. Shri Mataji describes the powers of water as parallel to the spiritual powers of a Sahaja Yogi whose awakened Kundalini can similarly nourish others. She explains Kundalini quenches, cools, nourishes, permeates, cleanses, purifies, connects, revitalises and evolves. Since Nabhi is closely related to water, clean water is good for it. A person with a healthy Nabhi is relaxed, peaceful, generous, and is a satisfied person. The Nabhi Chakra relates closely to the home and well-being of the family. If our welfare seems threatened, if we do not feel at ease, or if we have trouble fulfilling our basic needs then the Nabhi chakra can feel pressured. The problem often seems to be that, in the West, we are often caught up in endless desires for security, sensation, power and control, including the desire for material wealth. To maintain our satisfaction within, we must also be able to exist in a balanced state of satisfaction without things beyond the basic needs. Since this Earthly realm is full of so many attractions and choices it is easy to become dissatisfied. The way through these choices has been charted in all sustainable societies and true religions as a principled code or Way of life called Dharma. The more one enjoys becoming the Spirit the less time one has for wrongful things, outside of Dharma. The seeker of truth surrenders desires and agendas so they feel satisfied within, whatever they have, and so they focus their desire power on their Spiritual unfoldment. The presiding Deity, or personification of the Nabhi principle, is Shri Vishnu and his consort Shri Laxmi. Many powers are invested in these two. He is responsible for sustaining Dharma and leading the human evolution. She grants physical and material well-being, On the left, she is Shri Gruhalaxmi, the wife or Goddess of the household. The wife must be respected and also be respectable. So many of our society's problems often stem from poor quality of homelife in the West with the resulting sense of dissatisfaction. Food is also closely involved with satisfaction and the Nabhi. Too much attention on food, or fasting, or the wrong type of foods can cause the Nabhi chakra to 'catch'. We eat to live not live to eat. Our food and well-being are prerequisite for our functioning both within and without. Because the quality of our attention is closely involved with the liver, which means we can get caught up with thinking and worrying, we should avoid fatty foods that are testing for the liver. Food that soothes the Nabhi and cools the liver helps the attention attain thoughtless meditation. True satisfaction can only be sustained when our Spirit comes into our attention. It is the Spirit's power, the Kundalini, which has created, evolved and sustained us and it is the Kundalini that connects us to that Source of satisfaction.

After our physical birth we then experience our selves as separated and so it is only natural that we seek and long for that sense of connection, nourishment and security. This seeking finds expression in many ways. Sometimes we seek for gross physical pleasures and external and material satisfactions in the world, yet these invariably do not fully satisfy us, they prove to be stormy, transient and therefore illusory. Perhaps this leads us to understand that the means to really satisfy ourselves, the Kingdom of Heaven, lies within us and so we may begin seeking in earnest for our inner or ultimate fulfillment. There is a gap, between the separated and conditioned sense of self we experience ourselves as, and the eternal, spiritual core of our being which is completely secure, connected and joyful. This divide, between the illusory and relative nature of the world and the ultimate Reality, is manifest in a physical gap in the central channel, within the para-sympathetic nervous system. This gap actually exists physically between the sacral outflow and the vagus nerve, encompassing the Subtle area called as The Void or the Ocean Of Illusion.To cross this gap, this Ocean of Illusion we need to develop Balance, Self-Mastery and pure desire. We also require the help of a true Guru. Someone who will awaken Kundalini so we will be able to discern the correct Path and cross the Void, to the heart, where is the true Self, the eternal Spirit. It is in this state of disconnectedness that seekers may search for a guide or Guru to help them to find the Way, a Path or process tocross the Void, the illusions and connect with that Source of all satisfaction, joy and fulfilment, the Divine, Source, Tao, or God. There have been many great incarnations of the principle of Guru or Spiritual Teacher who have incarnated to guide groups of sincere seekers towards their Self-Realisation. The personifications or incarnations of this principle include Abraham, Moses, Muhammed, Zarathustra, Lao Tze, Confucious, Sai Baba of Shirdi, Guru Nanak, Raja Janaka and Socrates. Also there have been false gurus who have plundered and damaged the seekers. The Goal in Sahaja Yoga is to help the true seekers to find their Self-realisation so they can become their own gurus. Most often for the seekers, so far, the only assistance has been to receive a set of gudelines, or rules, a dharmic way of behaving that will help maintain individual and collective balance. So we have sets of rules in the religions such as the Ten Commandments. Moses as an example of the Guru principle led his people out of slavery, across the ocean and to the promised land. Shri Mataji in this modern era holds a unique place in the tradition of Gurus because she has created a method for enmasse Kundalini awakening and so facilitated the creation of so many potentially enlightened Gurus. Only Kundalini can bridge that great divide between illusion and Reality. On first awakening, Kundalini ascends Sushumna (centre) nadi up to Agnya chakra. It covers the lower plate (moordha) then descends like melting clouds on the Ida (left) and Pingala (right) nadis to the Void. It fills this area and then the three combined powers re-ascend the Sushumna (central) to open the lotus petals of the Sahasrara. The Spirit, which is said to be watching through the manifold subtle auras of the heart, has its seat at the top of the head in the centre. When the individual spark of the Spirit is raised and reunited in Union, or Yoga, with the all-pervading and all-powerful Source at the apex of the Sahasrara then the Reality of the essential core of existence is realised. and this enables one to start to become their own Guru, based on a new enlightened awareness.

It is placed in the centre of the chest which is also at the centre of the whole subtle body system. Our security is felt from this chakra, if we receive a fright we often spontaneously cover our heart. It is the power of love and joy and confidence, emanating from heart, which testifies to the eternal unconquerable Spirit that resides therein. The Sahaja Yoga affirmations for the Heart (Anahat) Chakra is "I am the Spirit. In my Spirit I am completely secure. In my Spirit I am a completely fearless person.". After Self-realisation, the heart is felt to have three distinct aspects, the left, right and centre. On the left is the Spirit, the Atma or Self which manifests pure existence, awareness and joy. (Sat-Chit-Ananda). Once our Spirit comes into our attention we begin to drop false identifications with the body, mind, ego, emotions and conditionings. We are then free to be, open, spontaneous, natural, instruments of the Divine. When you know you are the Spirit you know the security of knowing that you are eternal, a child of God. The deity or principle of left heart is God the father, Lord Shiva, and his shakti, Shri Parvati, In India and other Asian countries, people upon meeting each other acknowledge the Spirit in the other person by raising their hands to prayer position, in Namaskar, and by bowing. These gestures recognise and respect the essential divinity in the other person. As the poet says "It is not for the sake of the person that the person is dear, but for the sake of the Spirit in the person, that the person is dear." Perhaps the most dear relationship is the love between the mother and her child. This earthly mother (physical) relationship is also felt on the left heart and so this role and relationship must be truly valued. The centre heart governs the sense of security and protection. Here as a child, antibodies are created to fight any negativity within the body. The principle here is personified as the Great Goddess Jagadambe, the most powerful multi-armed destroyer Deity who protects and ultimately conquers all that is against Her children. The right heart governs our relationship to our earthly father, and to our sense of duty and to our sense of correct behaviour. The well-being and protection of our father, our relationship with him and with other masculine figures, husband, brothers and sons, and also the appropriate conduct of the father, neither irresponsible nor overly dominating, is important. Difficult relationships do put pressure on the heart. The Deity or principle of right heart is the perfect husband, son, father and king-warrior, Lord Rama and his spouse Shri Seeta. He laid down, by example, the ideals or maryadas for right behaviour in family life. Love is the ultimate quality or power of the heart. Not the fearful, grasping, dependent or dominating condition some may have called love but the great, fearless, life-giving, quality of open-heart that affirms, nourishes and protects. Pure Love is detached. It wants at all costs what is truly best. Spiritual love is the fountainhead of all life. It gives to all, permeates all and does all the living work. It is said "God is Love". The principle element of Heart is air. Air is a primary need for us to sustain life. To clear and strengthen the heart chakra you can take large lungfuls of air, that effectively provides energy and dispels negativity. Extreme over activity of the right side, physically or mentally, stresses the heart as does anti-god activity. Essentially in Spirit we are all one. Competition and fear reduce the sense of Love and compassion and so make us strangers to our Selves. Shri Mataji has said many times that "Sahaja Yoga is only Love".

It is situated at the throat and is a complex centre for receiving and sending. We understand that waves have vibrations, like TVs and mobile phones, and that routinely these instruments pick-up these invisible waves and make sense of them. Likewise, to a much more subtle degree we are empowered to pick-up and send vibrations, waves. This happens through our Vishuddhi Chakra. The Sahaja Yoga affirmations for Vishuddhi Chakra are "I am not guilty. Mother please make me ~ the detached witness~ part & parcel of the whole. Mother verily You are the sweet countenance of all my words and deeds." After Self-realisation, the Spirit is able to interact with our consciousness much more directly. When we are clear we can put attention on people, things, ourselves and get accurate direct knowledge of everything at the vibrational, subtle, actual level. This is a new state of Vibrational Awareness working through our hands and awareness. The whole cosmos both within and without begins to open up to us and we begin to see more of the grandeur and essential nature of the creation. This facilitates our enlightened understanding and we witness things, events and people in a more detached and knowing way. The Vishuddhi Chakra picks up on the etheric vibrations from wherever we place our attention. This is a very good reason to be careful where and how we place or direct the attention, including the attention of others. The Vishuddhi can and does transmit vibrations, not only in the gross sense of speaking, or arm movements, but by placing our heart-felt and focused attention on people we can literally bestow help to bestow qualities, on them. One soon realises one gets one's own transmission back and so you determine as best you can to be an instrument of divine love. We also have the power to evoke feelings in others, like guilt, anger, jealousy or love through our speech. Ideally you see everyone as a pure spiritual being, a part and parcel of the Whole, of which you are part. This means everyone is sacred, worthy of respect and loving treatment as you would your sister, brother, child or parent. One of the most dear relationships is the sweet love between the brother and sister. Unfortunately in the West this relationship is poorly valued and chastity itself is almost disregarded. Likewise the idea of sweetness and diplomacy as an ideal is also almost lost with the idea of aggressiveness or sarcasm taking its place in order to get what you want. The brother-sister relationship is felt on the left side of Vishuddhi and sweetness is expressed on the right. The Vishuddhi and accompanying Hamsa chakra at the top of the nose work as filters. Smoking, anger, guilt or inability to witness are some of the things that can cause this chakra to 'catch'. The personification of this principle is the Lord Krishna and his consort Shri Radha. His incarnation principle was to clarify our eternally spiritual nature and to urge us to see and witness the divine drama of creation as a play. He was Yogeshwara the God of Yoga who urges the practice of yoga. "When the mind of the Yogi is in harmony and finds rest in the Spirit within, all restless desires gone, then he is a Yukta, one in God" (Bhagavadgita) Essentially in Spirit we are all connected. This connection is felt through our Vishuddhi. Vishuddhi is the hollow flute which expresses the sweetness of the Heart. The sweet music delights the sender and receiver. This whole manifest creation is known as the Virata. The Virata is reflected in all its power and glory within us as the subtle body. We can know absolutely that we are part and parcel of the Whole.

This is the level of our mind. Our mind has two lobes, the ego, which gives us our sense of separateness, and our superego, which has our conditionings and memory. The goal in Sahaja Yoga is to bring the light of the Spirit to the brain and so achieve enlightenment, Self-Realisation. The Sahaja Yoga affirmations for the Agnya Chakra are "I forgive everyone, including myself. Mother, by your grace I am forgiven. Mother please make me a forgiving person. Mother verily You are the forgiveness." When Kundalini passes through this chakra, our thought waves elongate so the space between thoughts grows longer. The present moment begins to fill the attention and we enter the state of meditation in thoughtless awareness. Then we can see without colouring or projecting, simply, innocently, like a child. Jesus Christ, the personification or deity of the Agnya chakra is said to have explained "Unless you be as little children, you cannot enter into the Kingdom of God." This entry point is "the narrow gate" between the ego (ahankara) and superego (manas). This is the "now" point that remains clear and unpressured, beyond the mind's remembrances of the past, and beyond the ego's mental projections about the future. The mind, like the body, gives us fairly convincing ideas of our existence. However, with an enlightened mind we find, as Shri Mataji has said, that we are not the body, the mind, ego and conditionings, but we are the Spirit. This was the essential revelation of Christ who fully manifested the divine qualities of the Agnya chakra, compassion and forgiveness. His testimony, of undoubted Oneness with his Father, is the Nirvikalpa experience of the yogi, who has been cleansed and prepared by the divine Mother, Kundalini. His assertion "I am the Way, the Truth and the Light" are ultimate expressions of this enlightened Agnya. It is through deep meditation, forgiveness and humility that this process, of crossing the Agnya chakra, is worked out. The left and right channels cross just below the Agnya. Should either of these channels be overly active they create a burden and imbalance in the subtle body that pressuresand closes the narrow gate and has us again feeling alone and unconnected. The right channel is easily inflated with the idea 'I do'. Too much thinking, planning, projecting, over activity, anger, competitiveness or superiority will cause blockage and also deplete the left side of the essential ability to feel and love. If one becomes too 'right sided' one can enter the hot realm of the supra-conscious the realm of the future. The left channel can catch by being overly emotional, too expressive, a victim, wishing harm to oneself, becoming immersed in the past, too involved in unhealthy habits or subconscious images and dead ideas. This is the realm where everything from the past is placed including dead spirits and the Collective Sub-conscious. A central idea in spiritual evolution is the idea of being "Born again". This is not a process of self or group certification. It is the process of Self-realisation in which one breaks through, surrenders the lesser sense of ego and conditioning, and becomes resurrected, identified with your eternal awareness, the Spirit. Here one goes beyond the mind and often humorously witnesses the play of the ego and conditionings as they battle to have their way. One is still in the world, yet in a detached, joy filled and loving way. You easily forgive, for not to forgive causes you a problem. You know and enjoy your own Spirit, the same Spirit in all, and witness the play of the Creation. You are humble before the ultimate majesty of the Creator and you also spontaneously experience true love and compassion for the human condition.

Fontanel means fountain and there are many references to the cool breezes that blow, and the fountains that flow in the Kingdom of Heaven, above, in all major religious texts and mystical traditions. As man is the epitome of Evolution, so the epitome of man is the joyful integration at Sahasrara Chakra. Each day allow the attention to rise into Sahasrara and dissolve within the cool breeze of your Kundalini. The Sahaja Yoga affirmations for the Sahasrara Chakra are " Mother/Kundalini, by your grace I am protected from all the challenges to my ascent. Mother please make me~ a better Sahaja Yogi ~ completely Self-realised. Mother verily You are the Victory over all the challenges to my ascent." The Sahasrara is the uppermost point of the manifest Creation. It is a privileged place for us to enter into the Kingdom of Heaven within. Here in silent majesty is the subtle source point for the three great powers that create, sustain and resolve the creation in all its myriad forms. At this point we go beyond the relativity of temporal existence, beyond time and drama, spontaneously in the Flow of the Divine vibrations. This is the point of Oneness, the realisation of Heaven on Earth, achieved by the Sahaja Yogi.Here the complete perfection of the human potential begins to flower. The awakened cool breeze or fire of Kundalini begins to cleanse and nourish the whole subtle body and the Grace of God falls within you. In the Silence of Sahasrara the whole instrument is integrated. Each chakra has its place (Pitha) there and here the Kundalini opens the lotus petals of the Sahasrara and enlightenment (Samadhi) takes place. You may feel a pulsation and a flow of cool vibrations. This is the baptism by which you know you are truly born again. Your new vibrational awareness signals you have moved into the subtlest level of communication, in collective consciousness. We become vessels for divine power and our presence begins to awaken others. We learn to really discriminate and appreciate the real depth and beauty of people, of Nature and all things by their vibrations. We no longer judge by opinion but by vibrations. Just ask a question and a positive answer comes as flow of cool vibrations. Just sit in meditation and ask the vibrations. It is conversation at its most sublime. The presiding deity of Sahasrara, Sri Kalki, is still to come. With his eleven destroying powers (ekadesha rudra) he is the final, most awesome incarnation of the evolving principle of Shri Vishnu. Meanwhile, we have the presence of Shri Mataji to awaken the seekers of the world to their rightful inheritance and their fully enlightened powers. Shri Mataji, as the source of this MahaYoga has her place too at the Sahasrara.chakra Shri Mataji : "Without opening the Sahasrara, God itself was a myth, religion itself was a myth, all talk about divinity was a myth.
