1 Greek & Latin Roots Unit 1: Mater/Pater & Bio/Corp/Carn

2 Prediction Statement For our first Greek/Latin roots unit, we will study the following roots: MATER, PATER, BIO, CORP, CARN On an index card, predict what you think each root may mean. Think about where you have heard these roots before. Do you already know words that contain these roots? Think hard about what can uncover about the meanings just from reflecting on your past experiences.

3 Roots Foldable On your own paper, take a moment to create a foldable template with four panels. There are 25 roots. You may need to create two foldable templates. Panel 1 - Roots Panel 2 - Definition Panel 3 - Commentary (Text to Text, Text to World, Text to Self) Panel 4 - Mnemonic Device (small illustration, phrase, etc./whatever helps you)

4 Mater & Pater The Greek Root MATER means MOTHER. The Greek Root PATER means FATHER.

5 Maternity ADJ - the quality or state of being a mother; motherliness Example: The store s general manager is on maternity leave.

6 Matriarch Noun - A woman who rules or dominates a family, group, or state Example - My grandmother is the matriarch of my family, so we always have holidays at her house.

7 Matrimony Noun - Marriage Example - My parents are eager to have my brothered settled in matrimony.

8 Matronly Adj - a married woman usually of dignified maturity or social distinction (matron) Example - A very kind, matronly woman greeted me at the door.

9 Matrix Noun - something within or from which something else originates, develops, or takes form. Example - The matrix consists of rows and columns of information.

10 Alma Mater Noun - an educational institute that one has attended Example - The University of Alabama is Mrs. Odom s alma mater.

11 Patrician Noun - a person of high birth Example - I am proud to be a patrician of Rome.

12 Paternal Adj - fatherly/related through or inherited or derived from a father Example - His paternal grandfather and his father both served in the Air Force.

13 Patron Noun - a person chosen or named as a special protector Example - I pledged fifty dollars to Alabama Public Television, so I guess that makes me a patron now!

14 Patriarch Noun - a man revered as a father or founder Example - George Washington, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson are American patriarchs.

15 Pattern Noun - An ideal model Example - The pattern of my shirt did clashed with the school picture background.

16 Patronym Noun - a name derived from the name of one s father or paternal ancestor Example - Western culture uses many patronymic last names.

17 Expatriate Noun - a person in exile (banished from home) from another land/country Example - After twenty years in exile, the military leader was allowed to return home.

18 Bio, Carn, Corp The Greek Root BIO means LIFE. The Greek Root Carn means FLESH/RED MEAT The Greek Root CORP means WHOLE BODY.

19 Biodegradable Adj - capable of being broken down especially by the actions of living things Example - Restaurants that use biodegradable take out containers are Earth friendly.

20 Biography Noun - a written history of a person s life Example - I read a biography about President Kennedy, and I learned that he had many health problems as child.

21 Bionic Adj - having normal biological capability or performance enhanced by or as if by electronic or mechanical devices. Example - I designed a superhero with a bionic arm.

22 Biosphere Noun - the part of the world in which life can exist Example - All living things on Earth are contained within a biosphere.

23 Carnage Noun - great destruction of life / slaughter Example - In the movie War of the Worlds, Tom Hanks and Dakota Fanning flee the carnage as aliens attack New York.

24 Carnivorous Adj - feeding on animal tissues/meat eating Example - Steakhouse commercials with scenes of huge ribeyes always leave Joe feeling carnivorous.

25 Corporation Noun - belonging to an incorporated body/relating to large scale business Example - Apple is one of the world s largest corporations.

26 Corpulent Adj - Obesity Example - A selection of the most corpulent chickens were selected for the banquet table.

27 Corpuscle Noun - a minute (tiny) particle; small cell that moves within the blood through the body. Example - Red blood cell corpuscles are very important in creating immunities.

28 Symbiosis Verb - the living together in close association of two dissimilar organisms. Example - The remora fish that cling to and eat small particles off the body of sharks are living in symbiosis with the sharks.

29 Corsage Noun - the waist or bodice of a dress; a bouquet to be worn or carried Example - In the past, dresses were sold in pieces with the sleeves, corsage, collar, and skirt threaded together on the lady wearing it.

30 Reincarnation Noun - rebirth of the soul in a new body Example - Egyptian pharaohs were buried with their treasures so they would have riches when resurrected through reincarnation.

31 Knowledge Check Now that you are somewhat familiar with these roots and words, take a moment to look over the list and highlight/star/check/circle the words that you think may be the most difficult for you to learn.
