7 Friday December 5 (First Day of Exams) FINAL (TAKE HOME) EXAM GIVEN IN COURSE REQUIREMENTS 1. Attendance and participation in ALL aspects of the course. Deduction of 1.0% from final grade for each class missed of several random attendances taken. 2. All readings as assigned. Bring Course Pack to Discussions. Extra readings may be assigned once the course has begun. 3. Group : Social Action 30% 4. Mid-Term Exam (Take Home). Essay on Siddhartha - Hermann Hesse. Handed out Monday September 29; Due: Thursday October 9. 30% 5. Final (Take-Home) Exam Due Friday December 5. 40% 6. (For Late assignment/exam - deduction of 5% per day (for that assignment) exception is with medical documentation/varsity sport/family bereavement to be forwarded to the Undergraduate Office, Department of Kinesiology, Room 219C Ivor Wynne Centre. 7. Three Reflection Papers (No grade given). These papers should be words typed and double-spaced (note your word count). The focus on writing may range conceptually from the personal to the global. You should write about whatever interests you from the viewing, whether your approach is negative, positive or a mix. It is a chance for you to reflect on your values and life practices and to understand those of other people and cultures. Papers will not be returned. They help the Prof gain a broader perspective of each student. It is likely that Reflection Papers can be written in 30-60mins after 2 viewings of each You Tube, perhaps as a free flow of ideas. Prof Wilson does not necessarily support all images, text, spoken ideas or comments for each You Tube. Bring your Reflective Paper to the class on the assigned date or to dcwilson@mcmaster.ca by 4.30pm that day. Penalty of 0.25% per day for late assignments. REQUIRED TEXTS Hermann Hesse. NOTES The course will at times involve physical touch by both the instructor and by students. The use of touch will be utilised in an appropriate manner in demonstrations and class activities with respect to relaxation techniques; posture/alignment exercises; and creative/play/dance activities. Students are requested to respect the personal boundaries of other students in class activities. For the group assignment, if a group member is not communicating well, or turning up to meetings, the group should select a delegate to warn the member regarding inappropriate ethical behaviour (e.g. putting group grade at risk). If after 2 warnings, there has not been a positive response, the group should inform the Professor (and hand in communications) who will contact the student informing him/her that 30% will be deducted for that student from the group grade.

8 All graded work will be returned during normally scheduled lecture and/ or practical time and students who are not available to pick up their work, must contact the instructor to make individual arrangements. The order of the course content may change due to professor illness, unavailability of guests, technical difficulties or other unexpected and unforeseen events. Selected You Tube videos may be assigned as supplementary course material and should be used to reinforce Final Exam answers. ACADEMIC DISHONESTY Academic dishonesty consists of misrepresentation by deception or by other fraudulent means and can result in serious consequences, e.g. the grade of zero on an assignment, loss of credit with a notation on the transcript (notation reads: Grade of F assigned for academic dishonesty ), and/or suspension or expulsion from the university. It is your responsibility to understand what constitutes academic dishonesty. For information on the various kinds of academic dishonesty, please refer to the Academic Integrity Policy, specifically Appendix 3, located at: COURSE OUTLINE MODIFICATIONS The instructor and university reserve the right to modify elements of the course during the term. The university may change the dates and deadlines for any or all courses in extreme circumstances. If either type of modification becomes necessary, reasonable notice and communication with the students will be given with explanation and the opportunity to comment on changes. It is the responsibility of the student to check their McMaster , Aveue and course websites weekly during the term and to note any changes. ABSCENCES If you are absent from the university for a minor medical reason, lasting fewer than 5 days, you may report your absence, without documentation, using the McMaster Student Absence Form (as long as the missed work is worth less than 29% of the final course grade). The MSAF can only be used once per term. Absences for a longer duration or for other reasons (eg. religious, personal) must be reported to the Faculty of Science Associate Dean s office, with documentation, and relief from term work may not necessarily be granted. When using the MSAF, report your absence to Dave Wilson (dcwilson@mcmaster.ca). Then contact the professor (normally within 2 working days) by /telephone/ in person to learn what relief may be granted for the work you have missed, and relevant details such as revised deadlines, or time and location of a make-up exam. Normally with an MSAF for minor illnesses such as flu, students will be given 5 days to complete an assignment.
