Karl Johnson, a Brooklyn-based composer-lyricist and singer-songer writer, is composer-in-residence and rehearsal accompanist for this summer's GLOW Lyric Theatre Music Festival. His songs have been featured in William Finn's Songs by Ridiculously Talented Lyricists and Composers You Probably Don t Know, But Should series at Barrington Stages and the Crazytown musical theatre blog for new works. Austin Ann Johnson is active in one of our covenant groups, volunteers for about anything she is asked to do, and is one of our coffee makers. She is also a vegetarian and a great grandmother. Her family would argue that she is pretty great at all her roles. Welcome Newcomers! To learn more about our Fellowship, please fill out the yellow card and drop it into the offering basket. His topic is straight out of today's headlines and his expertise his highly valued.

4 Highlights in Lifespan Religious Education From Babies to Sages August 4, 2013 Classes and Events Today 9:30: Childcare Opens, Choir Practice 9:45: Discussion Group Founders Room A Course in Miracles Spirit Play Room THE WORK of Byron Katie Pastor s Office in the Cottage (Welcome back, Rev. Pat!) CARING CARDS : Lots of us like to have our hands busy while we listen. Activity packets are available in a box at the door of the sanctuary. In large Ziploc bags, we have created Greeting Card Kits for anyone (adults included!) to use during worship. In them, you will find folded cardstock, markers, colored pencils, and stickers. We invite you to create a greeting card that will actually be sent to a congregant or other person who needs words of love and encouragement. You can put a message on the inside, or not, but please do put your name in small letters on the back of the card, so whoever receives it will know the name of the artist. We will send these cards to those who need them. Here is a wonderful opportunity to do something for others while you enjoy creating something special. After the service, drop your finished card into the basket you will see on the little pedestal beside the center doors. SAVE THE DATE: Sunday, August 11: Registration opens for new CYRE classes: Look for tables and volunteers in the lobby before and after service. Sunday, August 18: COVENANT CIRCLE SUNDAY: The worship service will be all about small group ministry and what it can mean to you and to the congregation. This day will begin a period of OPEN ENROLLMENT when folks can join one of our new or existing groups, and those who would like to make changes will be free to do so. You can pick up information, talk to facilitators, and sign up. Saturday, August 24: First and Second Session CYRE Teacher and Volunteer Training all levels. 9:30-1:00, Founders Room Brunch and Childcare provided.

5 August 25: CYRE Family Ingathering Picnic After Service at Herdklotz Park Parents, teachers, children, and youth, please make plans to join us for the Annual Picnic and Ingathering for all involved in Children and Youth Religious Education. We rent the pavilion, share a meal, and play on the playground and the volleyball field. Soccer and softball options are there too. At the picnic, families have an opportunity to register for the coming year, meet teachers, and give feedback about our programs and hopes they have for the coming year. Please bring a picnic side dish to share. RE will provide hot dogs (regular and veggie), buns, paper products, and ice. SUMMER CLASS: TELLING OUR STORIES Writing Workshops TUESDAYS, July 9-AUGUST 27, 6:30-8:30pm FOUNDERS ROOM Every session is a stand-alone, so anyone who can hold a pencil is invited to come to this fun and surprising Writers Workshop in which we use prompts, props and pictures to think together about a theme or idea, and then take time to write and share the personal stories or opinions that arise. You don t have to be a writer to enjoy this class and you will be amazed at the wonderful memories and stories that emerge from the group. Kathleen Anderson leads. She has been a Consultant for the South Carolina Writers Project since FYI: Regular and new RE programming for all ages officially begins September 8 th and 15 th. Watch your for a special bulletin announcing fall programming for children and adults. Ongoing Adult Religious Education Discussion Group Facilitator: Herb Reeves Sundays, 9:45 AM Founders Room, Welcome all. The Discussion Group is the longest running group at GUUF! 7 Sunday August 10 12:30...Renaissance fair meeting. My lords and ladies, we ve had time off and now we need to talk about the fair. We need to hear and talk about what was liked and what we didn t like. We have new ideas to change the theme of the fair and would love feedback on our ideas. If you would like to become part of the fair organization, this is the time to come aboard. We could always use more help and this is a great time and lots of fun. If you can t make the meeting and have input please make a list and give it to Mayor Todd or his wife Dana Couillard. Restaurant Dinner Group This month s dinner will be 7 pm Saturday, August 17 at Outback, 21 Orchard Park Dr. Good food, reasonable prices, pleasant ambiance, and a gaggle of GUUFs. 8 or Congregational Care Items We extend our loving support to: Sabrina Walker, who will be in St. Francis downtown (Room 529) for treatment for a month, and may need a bone marrow transplant soon. She asks that anyone so inclined consider joining the bone marrow donor registry at Sabrina welcomes calls and visitors, but asks folks to call ahead to be sure she is up to seeing people that day. Charlie Smith, who is recovering from successful carotid artery surgery. Longtime member Suzanne Hart (in her 90 s), who has given up driving and needs rides to continue to participate in GUUF activities. Please call her at to let her know if you would like to be on her list of folks she can call on. Suzanne lives at Westminster Retirement Community, 11 E. Augusta Place, Greenville Mary Foley and Jim Cooney, dealing with Jim s worsening Allzheimer's symptoms. This also keeps Mary mostly homebound and in need of contact from friends and some brief respite. Contact Mary directly to let her know if you can help and can schedule a visit.
