2 PREFACE The research work embodied in this thesis entitled SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF SOME XANTHATE COMPLEXES OF METALS OF 3d TRANSITION SERIES AND THEIR ADDUCTS WITH NITROGEN AND OXYGEN DONORS has been accomplished in the Department of Chemistry, University of Jammu, Jammu, under the guidance and keen directions of Prof. Renu Sachar, Head of the Department of Chemistry, University of Jammu, Jammu. The extent of information derived from literature has been incorporated in the thesis at appropriate places with the sources of information. The work is original and has not been submitted either in part or full for any other degree or diploma in this or any other University/Institute. 4 TO MY GUIDE I deem it my pleasant duty to express profound gratitude to my guide Prof. Renu Sachar, Head of the Department of Chemistry, University of Jammu, whose generous disposition made it possible for me to receive thorough guidance in the process of completing my research work. It is really a matter of Pride to have the opportunity to work under the supervision of Prof. Renu Sachar s Stature. The constructive criticism and useful suggestions I received from her have been a source of immense encouragement which got translated into hard work and proper application of mind on my part. I have to express my deep sense of indebtedness to my esteemed Supervisor who left no stone unturned to point out all shortcomings in my work with a view to improving upon the effort qualitatively as well as in terms of factual enunciation of the conclusions arrived at by me as a research scholar.

5 ACKNOWLEDGEMENT This humble research effort as a culmination of my academic career would never have seen the light of the day but for the guiding force symbolised by my parents preceeded by the heavenly blessings of Almighty. I have to express my deep sense of pain that the beacon light represented by my father the late Sh. Bharat Bhushan Kapoor got extinguished prematurely before this treatise could go to the press. However, my esteemed mother Smt. Santosh Kapoor helped me through in this protracted uphill task. I am extremely thankful to the teaching staff of the Department of Chemistry, University of Jammu for the persistent inspiration and valuable suggestions I received from them. My sincere thanks are due to the department of Physics also for allowing me to carry out the X-ray crystallographic studies. My special thanks are due to Prof. Rajnikant, Prof. Vivek Gupta, Mr. Kuldeep Singh and Sh. Karunesh Gupta for guiding and helping me in carrying out these studies. I am extremely thankful to the department of Plant Pathology, SKAUST, Jammu, for allowing me to carry out the biological studies connected with my work. I am also thankful to the Director, Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine, Jammu for providing necessary library facilities. I would fail in my duties if I do not express my gratitude to my friends, Tanishq, Munish, Bharat Bhushan Khajuria, Dr. Deepali Mahajan, Dr. Revika Arora and Ekta who stood by me in moments of desperate need in dealing with intricate academic problems.
