4 The Fall By Brady What does fame and fortune do to a man? A man used to look in the mirror He saw the boy who grew up in a small Virginia town. His name was Chris Brown. Playing basketball and football But mostly singing in the city streets. Eyes lit with determination Stiff upper lip It paid off. Money, fame and fortune were his. But celebrity and possessions Can transform a man. Soon, he thinks he transcends the law. He is invincible. He has it all. Like ancient Narcissus, full of himself He forgets about his roots. He cares only about his fame Consumed with his exotic cars and fancy accessories. Then he meets Rihanna She is like Helen of Troy, the ultimate prize. Everything is ideal. Such a striking couple. Parties almost every night But then the fighting begins. Fists flying, out of control Like Ares, the brutal god of war He goes too far and Rihanna is hurt. He is put under arrest Because that s against the law. Once a hero, but now just a crook. -4-

6 Presidential Deception By Max On whom can we rely? On whom can we depend? If the President cheats us Who should we have faith in? We elect him once He serves his term We elect him again He has earned our respect To cheat us into choosing them Leaves me insecure To know that I have been tricked Into something I do not believe When I cannot trust my commander in chief I feel like an infant Who cannot speak to anyone And cannot get what they want When I give them my presidential vote I want them to lead the nation In the right direction Nixon is modern King Midas He ruined his life for power Midas ruined it for gold They now are both regretting There selfishness during rule They will not have another chance To redeem their scarred souls -6-

8 The Line By Anna Needles and pins stick into your entire body You did no blazing You did no despising Being automatically taken to a vast hell Not even a chance to say, My love stay safe Having a rotting, moldy, old bag cover your head Strangers pushing and shoving You re isolated You re petrified You could have been a full hearted, aged adult To be honored for your personality To die with a smile To die with knowing you lived your life as best you could. But instead you ll wait in line The line of death It s like being Persephone Being captured by Hades Down to hell To sob, To sob for days It happened so quickly She hollered and screeched But no one could hear So she let the gayness and enjoyment run out of her body, Like a slithering snake You reach the front of the line You close your eyes You know your family is praying Praying for a chance to see your bold smile once more A hard, demanding push crushes your back You feel yourself soaring like a bird with one crippled wing Now you have left Gone to your last stop Guantanamo Bay -8-

10 The Twilight Sea By Catherine I just spoke my last unbidden words to him, Farewell my love. I held our children in my weak, forsaken arms. And each of us waved our dusky, black hands to him goodbye As he sailed off to the dark twilight sea, We knew he might never come back. The sea, a midst of glowering storm, The waves rambunctiously pummeling down, Like the poison from a black snake striking at you, that seeps into hell. A stormy night blue with the aura of danger upon each ripple The Men whose bones and souls that have vanished into the sea, Isolated to the ones they held dear to their hearts, Have lost everything. Like a lost blanket that you can t sleep without You re an apprehensive child. But this time sailing across the Atlantic. Odysseus, Sent to war, Didn t come back for twenty years. How could I let my love do that? And not hear a word from him. The butter-melting sun never showed while he was gone Crest fallen nightmares were swooping around my head, For the only hope in the heavens Was for my love not to die on his forlorn journey. -10-
