4 Chapter 1: Arcane Trickster class Introduction The arcane trickster is an interesting creature, blending rogue and wizard but no stranger to combat with a significant sneak attack ability enhanced by spellcasting. When deciding to transform this efficient prestige class into a class it was decided to explore a class for each of these areas the class excelled. The result is a more wizard-like version, a more bard/rogue like version and finally a more ranger/fighter like version giving players ultimate flexibility in choosing how they wish to play an arcane trickster. Arcane Trickster of Ritual: More wizardlike this arcane trickster has a wizard spell progress, attack bonus and hit points. He has 2 good saving throws and 4 skill points per level like the original arcane trickster. He gains ranged legerdemain. He gains 10 special abilities and much choose between sneak attack +1d6 each time, impromptu sneak attack, find familiar, scribe scroll, evasion, trap sense, uncanny dodge and (at 11th level and higher) rogue special abilities. Basically he can choose to be more rogue-like or wizard-like. Arcane Trickster of Deed: More bardlike, this arcane trickster has a bard spell Table 1-1: The Arcane Trickster of Ritual 5 progress, saves, attack bonus and hit points. He still only gains 4 skill points per level instead of a Bard s 6 per level. He gains sneak attack, ranged legerdemain and Impromptu sneak attack normally. He casts arcane spells and has a spellbook. Arcane Trickster of Steel: More ranger-like this arcane trickster has ranger attacks, saves, hit points and spell progression. He gains sneak attack and ranged legerdemain and impromptu sneak attack. He only gains 2 skill points per level. Arcane trickster of Ritual Watch this! see it? Let me do it again. Stealthy spy, charming bandit or mischievous troublemaker, arcane tricksters of ritual are highly adaptable adventurers who fill the classical roles of spellcaster and thief. The arcane trickster of ritual does not quite have the skill of rogue but he does have the spellcasting power of the wizard. When the arcane tricksters of ritual use magic to enhance their skills the can exceed both. The quintessential adventurer, the arcane trickster of ritual lives spur-of-the moment, using skill, stealth, mobility and magic to see the day through. 5 instructors but under a single veteran arcane trickster of ritual. They begin combining sorcery and stealth immediately. Nothing could be more satisfying for students impatient to unleash mayhem upon the world. They graduate far sooner but with a word of caution. They are warned against emulating the deeds of their teachers until they are equally experienced. With rash tendencies the injury and even mortality rate among tricksters may climb until the new tricksters are themselves become the teachers. Arcane tricksters of ritual need not concern themselves with qualifying for their class and can consider entering other prestige classes. They are slower to qualify for sorcerer and wizard prestige classes but have enough skills to get into many rogue prestige classes easily. Arcane tricksters of ritual who stick with their class are rewarded with the highest level of spellcasting when they enter epic levels. Hit Die: d4. Alignment: Any nonlawful. Class Skills The arcane trickster of ritual s class skills (and the key ability for each skill) are Appraise (Int), Balance (Dex), Bluff (Cha), Climb (Str), Concentration (Con), Craft (Int), Decipher Script (Int), Diplomacy (Cha), Disable Device (Int), Disguise (Cha), Escape Artist (Dex), Gather Information (Cha), Hide (Dex), Jump (Str), Knowledge (all skills taken individually) (Int), Listen (Wis), Move Silently (Dex), Open Lock (Dex), Profession (Wis), Sense Motive (Wis), Search (Int), Sleight of Hand (Dex), Speak Language (Int), Spellcraft (Int), Spot (Wis), Swim (Str), Tumble (Dex), and Use Rope (Dex). Skill Points at 1st Level: (4 + Int modifier) x4. Skill Points at Each Level: 4 + Int modifier. Class Features All of the following are Class Features of the arcane trickster of ritual. Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Arcane tricksters of ritual are proficient with all simple weapons, plus the hand crossbow, rapier, sap, shortbow, and short sword but not with any type of armor or shield. Armor of any type interferes with an arcane trickster of ritual s movements, which can cause his spells with somatic components to fail. Bonus Languages: An arcane trickster of ritual may substitute Draconic for one of the bonus languages 6 available to the character because of his race. Bonus Spells: The arcane trickster of ritual automatically knows mage hand. Ranged Legerdemain (Su): An arcane trickster of ritual can perform one of the following class skills at a range of 30 feet: Disable Device, Open Lock, or Sleight of Hand. Working at a distance increases the normal skill check DC by 5, and an arcane trickster of ritual cannot take 10 on this check. Any object to be manipulated must weigh 5 pounds or less. An arcane trickster of ritual can use ranged legerdemain once per day initially, twice per day upon attaining 5th level, and three times per day at 9th level or higher. He can make only one ranged legerdemain skill check each day, and only if he has at least 1 rank in the skill being used. Trapfinding (Ex): Like rogues, arcane tricksters of ritual can use the Search skill to locate traps when the task has a Difficulty Class higher than 20. Finding a nonmagical trap has a DC of at least 20, or higher if it is well hidden. Finding a magic trap has a DC of 25 + the level of the spell used to create it. Like rogues, arcane tricksters of ritual can use the Disable Device skill to disarm magic traps. A magic trap generally has a DC of 25 + the level of the spell used to create it. An arcane trickster of ritual who beats a trap s DC by 10 or more with a Disable Device check can study a trap, figure out how it works, and bypass it (with his party) without disarming it. Special Ability: At 3rd level and every 3 levels thereafter the arcane trickster of ritual gets a special ability. He may choose from evasion, Scribe Scroll, summon familiar, trap sense, uncanny dodge, improved uncanny dodge or sneak attack. At 12th level or higher, the arcane trickster of ritual may instead choose impromptu sneak attack or a rogue special ability. Evasion: The arcane trickster of ritual can avoid even magical and unusual attacks with great agility. If he makes a successful Reflex saving throw against an attack that normally deals half damage on a successful save, he instead takes no damage. Evasion can be used only if the arcane trickster of ritual is wearing light armor or no armor. A helpless arcane trickster of ritual does not gain the benefit of evasion. Trap Sense (Ex): The arcane trickster of ritual gains an intuitive sense that alerts him to danger from traps, giving him a +1 bonus on Reflex saves at 3rd level made to avoid traps and a +1 dodge bonus to AC against attacks made by traps. Each time he takes this ability the bonus increases by +1 against traps and to AC. Trap

6 sense bonuses gained from multiple classes stack. Scribe Scroll: The arcane trickster of ritual gains this feat for free. Summon Familiar: The arcane trickster of ritual can obtain a familiar in exactly the same manner as a sorcerer can. The arcane trickster of ritual s master class level is his arcane trickster of ritual level, plus any levels in any classes that grant the summon familiar ability. See the sorcerer description and the information on Familiars in Chapter 2: Classes in the Player s Handbook. Uncanny Dodge (Ex): The arcane trickster of ritual can react to danger before his senses would normally allow him to do so. He retains her Dexterity bonus to AC (if any) even if he is caught flat-footed or struck by an invisible attacker. However, he still loses her Dexterity bonus to AC if immobilized. If an arcane trickster of ritual already has uncanny dodge from a different class he automatically gains improved uncanny dodge (see below) instead. Improved Uncanny Dodge (Ex): The arcane trickster of ritual can no longer be flanked. This defense denies another arcane trickster of ritual, or rogue, the ability to sneak attack the character by flanking him, unless the attacker has at least four more arcane trickster of ritual levels than the target does. If a character already has uncanny dodge (see above) from a second class, the character automatically gains improved uncanny dodge instead, and the levels from the classes that grant uncanny dodge stack to determine the minimum rogue level required to flank the character. Impromptu Sneak Attack (Ex): Once per day an arcane trickster of ritual can declare one melee or ranged attack he makes to be a sneak attack (the target can be no more than 30 feet distant if the impromptu sneak attack is a ranged attack). The target of an impromptu sneak attack loses any Dexterity bonus to AC, but only against that attack. The power can be used against any target, but creatures that are not subject to critical hits take no extra damage (though they still lose any Dexterity bonus to AC against the attack). Each time he takes this special ability he can use this ability an additional time per day. The arcane trickster of ritual must be 11th level or high to take this special ability. Sneak Attack (Ex): The arcane trickster of ritual gains the rogue s ability to sneak attack. Each time he chooses this special ability increase his sneak attack damage by 1d6. Spells: An arcane trickster of ritual casts arcane spells which are drawn from the sorcerer/ wizard spell list. An 7 arcane trickster of ritual must choose and prepare his spells ahead of time (see below). To learn, prepare, or cast a spell, the arcane trickster of ritual must have an Intelligence score equal to at least 10 + the spell level. The Difficulty Class for a saving throw against a arcane trickster of ritual s spell is 10 + the spell level + the arcane trickster of ritual s Intelligence modifier. Like other spellcasters, an arcane trickster of ritual can cast only a certain number of spells of each spell level per day. His base daily spell allotment is given on Table x-x: The Arcane trickster of ritual. In addition, he receives bonus spells per day if he has a high Intelligence score. When the arcane trickster of ritual gets 0 spells per day of a given spell level he gains only the bonus spells he would be entitled to based on his Intelligence score for that spell level. Although an arcane trickster of ritual does not get 1st level spells until 3rd level, his caster level is his arcane trickster of ritual level.
